This interactive lecture explores the prevalence of calls for abdominal pain. Abdominal pain remains one of the most often-cited reasons for seeking medical care and will affect almost every person at least once in their lifetime. More than 100 diseases, ranging from benign to life-threatening, can cause abdominal pain. Patients’ complaints are often nonspecific, so arriving at a diagnosis can be challenging even with advanced diagnostic tools at your disposal.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

• Understand the functions and locations of the organs and other relevant anatomic structures of the abdomen.
• Describe the assessment process for a patient with acute abdominal pain using the AMLS Assessment Pathway.
• Appreciate the conditions that may predispose a patient to an abdominal disorder.
• Demonstrate history-taking and assessment skills to identify life threats and abdominal disorders.
