This module is provides information and guidance on how to incorporate simulations into EMS training programs in order to enhance the training experience. Simulated patient encounters allow learners to assimilate multiple tasks and develop critical thinking skills for everyday events or for low-frequency, high-acuity events. They also allow educators to observe actions and support the learner’s ability to make better clinical decisions. The use of simulation in an EMS training program brings standardization and objectivity to the training and evaluation processes, and it should be strongly considered by any organization that provides direct patient care at any level.

After completing this module, you will be able to:

• Define terminology used in simulations.
• Determine what criteria to use when choosing a simulation.
• Explain why scenarios are important teaching tools.
• Describe how to create a simulation encounter.
