This interactive lecture explores how the creation and adoption of evidence-based guidelines has contributed and continues to contribute to the evolution of emergency medical services. It discusses the purpose of continuous quality improvement, the steps in the National Prehospital Evidence-Based Guideline Model process, and resources available to help with development of evidence-based guidelines

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

• Discuss the purpose of the EMS continuous quality improvement (CQI) process.
• Define evidence-based medicine and discuss the role medical research plays in refining EMS practices.
• Identify the steps in the National Prehospital Evidence-Based Guideline Model Process
• Explain the benefits of evidence-based medicine in patient care.
• Identify resources available to aid states and agencies in developing evidence-based guidelines.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Evidence-Based Guidelines (BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE. This continuing education course satisfies the NREMT’s NCCR 2016 Category Evidence-Based Guidelines for EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics.
