This interactive lecture explores key considerations for responding to an obstetric or maternity call. Although childbirth and pregnancy are both naturally occurring states, they have the potential for serious complications, including maternal and fetal death. With the advent of modern medicine, maternal and infant mortality rates have been significantly reduced, and close medical monitoring usually reveals problems well before childbirth. Nonetheless, EMS practitioners must be well prepared to manage a variety of complications that can occur during pregnancy and childbirth.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Discuss complications related to pregnancy.
- Discuss the management of a high-risk pregnancy and considerations and complications during emergency delivery, including:
- Breech presentation
- Limb presentation
- Multiple births
- Shoulder dystocia
- Cephalopelvic disproportion
- Nuchal cord
- Umbilical cord prolapse
- Cephalic presentation
- Explain the steps to take during neonatal assessment and resuscitation, including resuscitation guidelines when meconium is present.
- Discuss umbilical cord management during an obstetric emergency.
Practitioners who successfully complete Obstetric Emergencies (ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE. This continuing education course satisfies the NREMT’s NCCR 2016 Category OB Emergencies for Paramedics.
