This Recert course discusses fire smoke, which is responsible for both long- and short-term health hazards when fire fighters become exposed by way of inhalation, ingestion, and skin absorption. All emergency responders must know the hazards of breathing smoke and the need to take precautions to reduce exposure. Fire fighters and EMS personnel should be familiar with the signs and symptoms of smoke inhalation, and all responders should know what medical treatment protocols exist within the AHJ.
After completing this course, the fire fighter will be able to:

- Discuss the effects of carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide on the body.
- Describe methods for treating smoke inhalation.
- Discuss postfire detection and monitoring needs.
- Discuss the purpose of detection devices at fire scenes.
- Discuss the various technologies available for fire-ground detection and monitoring.
- Discuss general fire-ground monitoring principles and practices.
Fire fighters who successfully complete the Responder Health and Safety course are eligible for 1 hour of continuing education.
