This Recert course discusses how the fire officer is responsible for conducting, and possibly helping to develop, public safety education programs. Media relations require the fire officer to build a strong foundation, reach out to the media proactively, and provide measured responsiveness. A carefully developed social media strategy allows officers to expand community outreach and deliver immediate, far-reaching safety messages.

After completing this course, the fire officer will be able to:

• Discuss the role of demographics in fire department-community relations.
• Discuss the role of fire safety education in risk reduction.
• List and describe opportunities for public education.
• List and describe steps to develop public education programs at the local level.
• Describe the role of the media in getting fire department information to the community.
• Describe the role of the public information officer in working with the media.
• Discuss the role of social media in community relations.

Fire officers who successfully complete the Working in the Community course are eligible for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
