This Recert course discusses the overseeing of any structured probationary fire fighter in-field training and experience programs. Feedback is most effective when delivered as soon as possible after an action or incident. Fire officers should keep a performance log or T-account on every fire fighter. Performance or behavior that does not meet standards should be managed first with positive discipline and then, if necessary, with negative discipline.

After completing this course, the fire officer will be able to:

• Discuss the impact of the International Association of Fire Fighters on fire fighters and emergency medical services personnel.
• Describe how to establish a strong supervisor–employee relationship.
• Discuss the value of positive labor–management relations.
• Describe the fire officer’s role as a supervisor.
• Describe the legislative framework for collective bargaining.
• Discuss the fire service’s relationship with labor unions through history.
• List and describe labor actions in the fire service.
• Discuss the emergence of labor organizations as a means of exerting political influence.
• Discuss the role of labor–management alliances and list four national examples.

Fire officers who successfully complete the Organized Labor and the Fire Officer course are eligible for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
