This Recert course discusses proper handling, use, maintenance, and inspection of fire service ladders. Gaining access to roofs and upper stories of multistoried structures is essential for rescue, ventilation, and other fire suppression activities. In this respect, the fire fighter’s dependence on ground ladders is obvious. There is probably no more basic fire service tool than the ladder but also none more dangerous when improperly used. Lack of knowledge of proper ladder procedures can result in sustaining severe injuries that can be permanently disabling or even fatal. Every fire fighter must know how to lift, carry, position, raise, secure, climb, maintain, and inspect fire service ladders.

After completing this course, the fire fighter will be able to:

• List and describe the parts of a ladder.
• Categorize the different types of ladders.
• Inspect ladders.
• Maintain ladders.
• Clean ladders.
• Describe when, where, and who performs service testing on ladders.
• Specify the hazards associated with ladders.
• Itemize the measures fire fighters should take to ensure safety when working with and on ladders.
• Cite the factors and guidelines used to select the appropriate ladder from the fire apparatus.
• Describe how to remove a ladder from the apparatus.
• Describe how to lift ladders.

Fire fighters who successfully complete the Ladders course are eligible for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
