This Recert course discusses the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Section 1983 of the Civil Rights Act, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which investigates and enforces federal laws pertaining to discrimination in the workplace. Documentation and recordkeeping should be thorough and accurate in order to minimize possible risk and liability. Instructors also are tasked with guiding ethical conduct, protecting confidentiality in records, dealing with social media, and adhering to copyright and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) laws.

After completing this course, the fire instructor will be able to:

• Describe how laws and standards apply to the fire service instructor.
• Discuss the importance of proper recordkeeping.

Fire instructors who successfully complete the Legal Issues course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education.
