This Recert course discusses determining the initial origin and cause of a fire, which is one of the responsibilities of a company officer. He or she must first determine the origin of the fire and then identify which material was first ignited, how, and why. All fires must be properly documented according to the fire department’s standard operating procedures. The fire officer must be familiar with applicable regulations, respect the competing interests of a citizen’s right to privacy and due process, and be prepared to testify in court if asked to do so.

After completing this course, the fire officer will be able to:

Fire officers who successfully complete the Fire Cause Determination course are eligible for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
