This Recert course sets out the tenets for developing a safety culture in the fire department by discussing how the fire service instructor acts as a role model, how safety begins in the classroom, and how risk management practices should be applied in hands-on training. It also introduces the 16 fire fighter life-safety initiatives, as well as discusses what the fire safety instructor must do to incorporate safety into every stage of the lesson plan, beginning with knowing the department’s safety policies and continuing through ensuring the physical and emotional safety of students during training. Finally, it examines legal considerations for instructors and some of the NFPA standards that should be considered—especially NFPA 1403, which governs live fire training—when planning training evolutions.

After completing this course, the fire instructor will be able to:

• Discuss the relationship between training and fire fighter safety.
• List the 16 fire fighter life-safety initiatives.
• Describe how to ensure safety in the classroom.
• Describe how to promote and teach safety by example.
• Describe your responsibility for student safety during training.
• Describe the laws and standards pertaining to safety during live fire training.
• Discuss how to develop safety as part of your department’s culture.
• Discuss the relationship between training and fire fighter safety.
• List the 16 fire fighter life-safety initiatives.
• Describe how to ensure safety in the classroom.
• Describe how to promote and teach safety by example.
• Describe your responsibility to students and other instructors during training.
• Describe the laws and standards pertaining to safety during live fire training while supervising other instructors.
• Discuss how you as a supervisor can develop a culture of safety in your department.
• Describe your role as a supervisor in using the incident management system during all high-risk training activities.

Fire instructors who successfully complete the Safety During the Learning Process course are eligible for 1 hour of continuing education.
