First Responder Support & Resilience is an interactive simulation where you learn how to support other first responders and practice talking to coworkers who are going through challenging times. As you complete the scenarios, you’ll learn how to approach checking in with coworkers you’re concerned about, show you understand, help them problem-solve, and if necessary, connect them to additional help. Let’s face it, these conversations are not easy. Like most high-intensity, low-frequency events, the time that we take to practice and train for these difficult situations allows us to be ready when it really counts. When someone needs your help, knowing how to listen and respond appropriately is critical. This simulation allows you to practice and learn from these conversations in a safe environment so you are prepared to handle these situations in the real world. The skills you’ll practice are relevant for any situation where you’re supporting a coworker or friend.

Did you know that over 30% of fire fighters and police officers experience challenges related to a tough call? The effects from these calls might include nightmares, emotional numbness, anger, and always feeling on edge. As a first responder, one of your primary goals should be to recognize when your coworkers are going through a tough time and understand ways you can help them. Teams that feel fully supported by their peers are better positioned to serve their communities. This simulation will show you how to be on the lookout for patterns of negative behavior and extreme changes in behavior and will prepare you to address your concerns effectively and in a non-confrontational manner. In this simulation, you’ll work your way through a few scenarios where you will practice talking to virtual peers. Throughout these conversations, you’ll choose what to say and how to help them work through the challenges they’re facing. You’ll get pointers along the way and at the end, you’ll have the chance to review how you did overall and reflect on how you might have handled things differently. There are also many tools and resources available to you, many of which have been provided for you in the References section that can be found at the end of the simulations.

The course is centered on five interactive role-play simulations that enable students and experienced professionals to speak with fully animated and emotionally responsive virtual peers.
The five simulations cover:

  1. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  2. Major depression
  3. Substance abuse
  4. Mental health stigma reduction
  5. Seeking help
