Elder mistreatment is a widespread and often hidden problem with many serious consequences for older adults and people who care about them. As EMS practitioners, you are uniquely positioned and qualified to detect this problem among the older adult patients in your care and to respond in ways that promote their health and well-being. Developed in conjunction with Education Development Center (EDC), the Recognizing and Responding to Elder Mistreatment interactive online course addresses the widespread problem of elder mistreatment and how EMS providers can help older adults live free from harm.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Describe the different types and consequences of elder mistreatment
- Explain the role of EMS in addressing elder mistreatment
- Recognize multiple warning signs of elder mistreatment in the homes and interactions of older adult patients as well as during physical examinations
- Describe the importance of implementing a trauma-informed approach to caring for older adult patients
- Communicate critical information about suspected elder mistreatment to emergency department staff during transitions of patient care
- Report critical information about suspected elder mistreatment to Adult Protective Services and/or other agencies designated by state law
Practitioners who successfully complete the Recognizing and Responding to Elder Mistreatment (BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 2.0 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
