This Recert course discusses a variety of means of better understanding and improving the fire officer’s communication skills. Effectively transmitting radio reports requires a unique skill set. Communication skills are equally important when working with citizens, conducting tours, releasing public information, preparing reports, and using social media.

• Describe the considerations and requirements to keep in mind when writing a report.
• Describe how to give an oral presentation of a written report.
• Identify the elements to include in a news release and the best format in which to put these elements.
• Discuss the effects of social media on fire department communications.

Fire officers who successfully complete the Fire Officer Communications course are eligible for 1.5 hours of continuing education.
