Respiratory emergencies are the most common medical emergency for children. When cardiac arrest is present, it is often preceded by respiratory distress and failure. While respiratory emergencies are common throughout the entire year, they do demonstrate some seasonality. In the Northern hemisphere, there is usually a respiratory season peak between the months of October and March.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Review the anatomy and physiology of the pediatric airway and ventilation
- Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure in pediatrics
- Discuss management of pediatric patients with respiratory emergencies using the Pediatric Assessment Triangle and XABCDE
- Use the most appropriate pediatric airway management intervention based on the patient's assessment findings
Practitioners who successfully complete the Pediatric Respiratory Emergencies (EPC 4e BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
