In EMS, we prepare for a wide variety of calls. We train for low-frequency, high-acuity calls and practice those skills in case they are needed. However, little time is invested in training personnel on how to keep themselves safe against the increasing hazard of violence in EMS. Consider organizational policies with participants for scene safety, like staging for unsafe scenes, clear guidelines for when to leave a scene, or what constitutes an assault.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

• Identify strategies to ensure practitioner safety
• Demonstrate effective de-escalation techniques for a stressful or potentially violent patient encounter
• Recognize the potential for violence against EMS practitioners
• Discuss the safe application of physical and chemical interventions for agitated patients

Practitioners who successfully complete the Practitioner Safety (EMS Safety 3e BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education through CAPCE.
